EU Opens Public Consultation on Exceptions to Ban on Destruction of Unsold Clothing

With the adoption of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) in spring 2024, the EU is setting a clear course toward a more circular and sustainable product policy. Among its key provisions is a ban on the destruction of unsold apparel, clothing accessories, and footwear, which will apply to large companies from 19 July 2026 and to medium-sized companies from 19 July 2030.

The European Commission has now launched a public consultation ("Have your say") to help define possible exemptions from this ban. Stakeholders are invited to share their views on cases in which such products cannot be reused and must be sent for recycling or other forms of waste treatment. The feedback period is open until 11 August 2025.
